Why Is My Vape Not Hitting? 9 Fixes That Actually Work

There are few things more frustrating than picking up your vape and getting nothing, no vapour, no draw, just silence. Whether you are using a prefilled pod kit, a refillable device or a mod, a vape that suddenly stops hitting almost always has a fixable cause. This guide walks through the nine most common reasons your vape is not working and exactly what to do about each one.

1. The Battery Is Dead or Too Low to Fire

The most common reason a vape stops hitting is simply that the battery has run out. Many devices will continue to show a light or seem "on" even when the battery is too low to actually fire the coil and produce vapour.

The fix: Plug your device in via USB-C and charge it for at least 30 minutes before trying again. If your device has an LED or display, check what the battery indicator shows before assuming something is wrong.

2. The Pod Is Not Seated Correctly

On prefilled and refillable pod kits, the pod needs to make firm contact with the device's connectors to fire. If the pod is slightly loose, tilted or not clicked in all the way, the device will not detect it and will not fire.

The fix: Remove the pod completely, check the connection pins at the bottom are clean and undamaged, then firmly reinsert the pod until you feel or hear it click into place. Give it a gentle wiggle, if it moves around freely, reseat it.

3. The Device Is in Lock Mode

Most vape devices have a built-in safety lock to prevent accidental firing in your pocket or bag. If your device is locked, no amount of drawing or button pressing will produce vapour.

The fix: Check your device manual for the unlock sequence. On most devices it is five rapid presses of the fire button in quick succession. You will usually see a light flash or the display change to confirm it has unlocked.

4. The Airflow Is Blocked

If you can draw air through your vape but get no vapour, a blocked airflow is a likely culprit. E-liquid condensation, dust or pocket debris can clog the airflow holes at the base or sides of a pod, preventing the draw-activated sensor from detecting your inhale.

The fix: Remove the pod and look for any visible blockage around the airflow inlet. Use a dry cotton bud or a rolled piece of tissue to gently clear any condensation or debris. Do not blow into the device as this can push liquid further inside.

5. The Coil Is Flooded

A flooded coil happens when too much e-liquid saturates the coil at once. You might hear a gurgling sound, feel liquid in your mouth when you inhale, or get very little vapour despite the device seeming to fire normally.

The fix: Remove the pod and hold it upside down over a piece of tissue for a minute to let excess liquid drain away from the coil. Then take three or four firm dry draws (inhaling without activating the device) to help pull any excess liquid off the coil. Avoid very hard puffing, which is the most common cause of flooding.

6. The Coil or Pod Needs Replacing

Coils do not last forever. On average a coil in a refillable pod kit lasts one to two weeks depending on how much you vape. On prefilled pods, the coil is built into the pod itself. When a coil burns out, the device may still fire but produce little to no vapour, or a harsh burnt taste with no proper draw.

The fix: On a refillable kit, replace the coil with a fresh one and prime it properly before vaping (see our guide on coil priming). On a prefilled pod kit, swap the pod for a new one. If the new pod or coil immediately fixes the problem, the old one was simply at the end of its life.

7. The E-Liquid Has Run Out

This sounds obvious but it catches people out, particularly on prefilled pods where you cannot see how much liquid remains. When a pod runs dry the coil can still fire but produces no vapour, and if left too long, will burn out the coil entirely.

The fix: On a refillable kit, simply refill the pod with your chosen e-liquid. On a prefilled pod kit, replace the empty pod with a new one. For devices with a transparent window (like the Lost Mary Nera 30K), always check the liquid level before troubleshooting anything else.

8. There Is a Connection Issue Between Pod and Device

Over time, the metal contact points between your pod and the device body can become dirty, corroded or slightly bent. This interrupts the electrical connection and prevents the device from firing even when the battery is charged.

The fix: With the pod removed, use a dry cotton bud to gently clean the metal contact pins on both the bottom of the pod and inside the device body. If a pin appears bent, use a cocktail stick to very carefully nudge it back into position. Do not use water or liquid to clean these contacts.

9. The Device Has a Fault or Needs a Reset

If none of the above fixes the problem, the device itself may have a temporary software fault or need a reset. This is more common on devices with chips and displays than on simpler draw-activated kits.

The fix: Most devices can be reset by pressing the fire button ten times in rapid succession, or by holding the fire button for ten seconds. Check your device manual for the specific reset method. If the device still does not work after a reset, contact the retailer for a warranty replacement.

Quick Reference Checklist

Before assuming your vape is broken, run through this checklist in order:

- ✅ Is the battery charged?

- ✅ Is the pod properly seated and clicked in?

- ✅ Is the device unlocked?

- ✅ Are the airflow holes clear?

- ✅ Is the coil flooded or at the end of its life?

- ✅ Is there e-liquid in the pod?

- ✅ Are the connection contacts clean?

In the vast majority of cases, one of these nine issues is the cause. A vape that is genuinely faulty is far less common than a fixable problem that looks like a fault.
