Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? 7 Causes and How to Fix It

A burnt taste from your vape is one of the most unpleasant experiences in vaping, harsh, acrid and completely overpowering any flavour you were hoping to enjoy. The good news is that a burnt taste almost always has a specific, fixable cause. Here are the seven most common reasons your vape tastes burnt and what to do about each one.

Why Does a Vape Taste Burnt in the First Place?

Before getting into the causes, it helps to understand what is actually happening. The coil inside your pod or tank is a small piece of wire wrapped around a wicking material (usually cotton). The cotton absorbs e-liquid, and when you fire the device the coil heats up and vaporises the liquid in the cotton. A burnt taste happens when the coil gets hot enough to burn the cotton itself either because there was not enough liquid in the cotton, the cotton has degraded over time, or the coil is running too hot.

1. You Did Not Prime the Coil Before First Use

This is the single most common cause of burnt taste, especially for new vapers and anyone using a fresh coil or pod for the first time. If you fire a new coil before the cotton has fully absorbed e-liquid, the dry cotton will burn immediately and the coil will be permanently damaged.

The fix: When installing a new coil or filling a new pod, always wait at least five minutes before taking your first puff. For higher-resistance coils (1.0 ohm and above), ten minutes is safer. This waiting period, called priming, lets the liquid fully saturate the cotton before heat is applied.

For extra confidence, add a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton of a new coil before installing it in the tank.

2. The Coil or Pod Is at the End of Its Life

Coils do not last indefinitely. The cotton inside gradually degrades through repeated heating and cooling cycles, and residue from e-liquid (particularly sweeter liquids) builds up on the coil surface over time. When a coil is past its useful life, it will produce a consistently harsh, slightly acrid taste even when the pod is full.

The fix: Replace the coil or pod. On refillable pod kits, coils typically last one to two weeks with regular vaping. On prefilled pod kits, the coil is integrated into the pod, so replacing the pod when it is empty is all that is needed. If you notice the taste getting progressively worse over several days even when the pod is full, a new coil or pod is the answer.

3. The Pod or Tank Is Running Low on E-Liquid

When the e-liquid level in your pod or tank drops low, the cotton wicking the coil may not be fully saturated between puffs. If you take a puff before the cotton has had time to re-wick from the remaining liquid, the partially dry cotton can burn.

The fix: Keep an eye on your e-liquid level and refill when it drops below a quarter full. Avoid chain vaping (taking puff after puff in quick succession) when the liquid level is low, give the cotton a few seconds to re-wick between puffs. On prefilled pod kits, replace the pod when the vapour production starts to noticeably reduce.

4. You Are Chain Vaping Too Fast

Even with a full pod, taking rapid puff after puff without a break can outpace the cotton's ability to re-wick. The coil heats up faster than fresh liquid can replace what has been vaporised, and the partially dry cotton begins to burn.

The fix: Take slower, more spaced-out puffs. A gap of 15 to 30 seconds between puffs is usually enough for the cotton to re-saturate. If you find yourself craving back-to-back puffs frequently, consider whether your nicotine strength is high enough under-dosing on nicotine is a common driver of chain vaping.

5. Your Wattage Is Too High

On adjustable devices, running the wattage higher than the coil's recommended range burns off e-liquid faster than the cotton can absorb it. The result is a hot, harsh, burnt hit.

The fix: Check the recommended wattage range printed on the side of your coil and stay within it. For most nic salt coils (0.8 to 1.2 ohm), a wattage of 12 to 20W is appropriate. For sub-ohm coils used with shortfill liquids, the recommended range will be higher but should still be followed.

6. You Are Using the Wrong Type of E-Liquid

Very sweet e-liquids (heavy dessert or candy flavours) contain high amounts of sweetener that caramelises onto the coil during vaping. This residue often called coil gunk builds up quickly and causes a sweet-then-burnt progression as the coating thickens.

The fix: If you vape very sweet flavours, expect to replace your coil more frequently than average. Alternatively, switch to less sweet profiles (fruit, menthol, or tobacco flavours) which are much gentler on coils. Rinsing a refillable pod with warm water when changing flavours also helps slow residue build-up.

7. There Is an Air Bubble Blocking the Wick

On some refillable pods, an air bubble can become trapped around the coil after filling, preventing liquid from reaching the cotton even though the pod is full. This is most common when filling too quickly.

The fix: After filling your pod, give it five to ten gentle taps on a flat surface to dislodge any trapped air bubbles. You can also cover the airflow hole with your finger and give the pod a few slow, gentle squeezes (on flexible-sided pods) to help liquid flow into the wick.

8. How to Tell If the Coil Is Permanently Damaged

If you have already taken several burnt hits from a coil, the cotton may be permanently scorched. Priming a damaged coil will not restore it, the burnt cotton will continue to affect the taste even with fresh liquid. The only solution is a new coil or pod.

Signs a coil is permanently burnt:

- Burnt taste persists even after refilling and waiting

- Taste is consistently harsh from the first puff on a fresh pod

- Dark brown or black residue visible on the coil if you remove it

Avoid the Burnt Taste Every Time

The single best habit for preventing burnt taste is patience, always prime new coils properly, never vape a nearly-empty pod dry, and give your device a few seconds between puffs. Following these three rules eliminates the vast majority of burnt taste experiences.
